John Knox House

The John Knox House displays a wooden gallery jutting out over the sidewalk, a rare survivor of the timber-fronted architecture that once dominated old Edinburgh. It dates to the late fifteenth century, making it one of the city's oldest dwellings. While the name links the building to the famous Protestant reformer, he likely never lived here. Instead, it was the home of James Mossman, a goldsmith who was eventually executed for remaining loyal to Mary, Queen of Scots, during the Lang Siege.
