George IV Bridge carries traffic across a deep chasm between the Royal Mile and the Grassmarket. It is supported by massive, vaulted stone arches hidden from the street level. Thomas Hamilton designed this structure in the eighteen twenties to link the rising southern suburbs with the dense medieval core. When the masonry settled, it revealed that the bridge actually sits on top of old, multi-story buildings that had been buried alive to create a flat, modern road through the uneven hills.
