Advocate's Close

A stone archway marks the entrance to Advocate's Close, where the ground drops sharply away from the High Street toward the valley below. The narrow passage owes its name to the legal professionals who once crowded into the tall, cramped tenements here to be near the Parliament House. In seventeen fifty-two, a lawyer named Alexander Lockhart lived in the house at the foot of this close. He famously defended the Jacobite rebels after their final defeat at the Battle of Culloden.
