The Vennel Viewpoint Edinburgh Castle

The Vennel is a long, steep stone staircase that slices through the dark masonry of the Old Town, framing a direct sightline to the rugged profile of Edinburgh Castle. The name comes from an old Scots word for a narrow passage between buildings. In the nineteen eighties, the city cleared out the decaying tenements that once crowded these stairs. What remained was this precise gap in the architecture, revealing the castle perched atop its volcanic rock, perfectly centered between the flanking walls.
