White Horse Close features a steep, cobblestone courtyard framed by crow-stepped gables and external stone stairs. It served as a staging post for travelers arriving in Edinburgh by coach in the seventeenth century. The White Horse Inn occupied the site, taking its name from the white steed belonging to Mary, Queen of Scots. Guests often stayed here before embarking on the long journey to London, which took two weeks by carriage. Today, the quiet square hides behind a narrow stone archway off the Canongate.
