The stone walls of Greyfriars Kirkyard hold thousands of burials within the heart of Edinburgh. This site became a cemetery in fifteen sixty-one, after Mary Queen of Scots granted the land to the town. In the late seventeenth century, a section of the ground served as a prison for Covenanters who refused to accept the King as the head of the church. Men huddled in the open air, suffering from exposure and starvation until they died or faced execution nearby.
