South Bridge carries the road across a deep, narrow ravine that once separated the old city from the southern suburbs. Nineteen arches support the structure, though only one of them remains visible from street level. When builders completed the bridge in seventeen eighty-eight, they also created a series of chambers and vaults hidden beneath the roadway. Merchants used these dark, windowless spaces as workshops and storehouses before the damp conditions eventually forced them out, leaving the underworld abandoned for generations.
