Bow Well

The Bow Well is a plain, wall-mounted fountain basin marked by an arched stone head tucked against the curve of Victoria Street. It replaced the original seventeenth-century town well that once served the residents of the West Bow when this steep, winding road was the main approach to the castle. In eighteen twenty-seven, a local resident named Agnes MacLehose, famous for her correspondence with Robert Burns, died nearby, and the fountain remains a quiet witness to the city's shifting commercial and residential life.
