North Bridge

The North Bridge features a row of massive stone arches that span the steep, narrow valley separating the Old Town from the New Town. Completed in seventeen seventy-two, this structure replaced a treacherous, muddy causeway that trapped carts in the deep mire. During the bridge’s opening, the sheer weight of the crowd caused the masonry to shift, killing five people. Engineers spent decades stabilizing the piers while the city expanded, eventually turning this crossing into the primary artery for Edinburgh’s growth.
