The Scotsman Steps consist of one hundred and four marble stairs connecting the Waverley Station area to the North Bridge. They were built in nineteen hundred and six as part of the Scotsman newspaper offices, designed to give staff a quick route to their desks from the trains. David Mach later transformed the worn stone into a public art installation by cladding the walls in ninety-six different types of Scottish marble. The colors shift from dark, muted tones at the bottom to vibrant hues.
