Edinburgh Waverley

Edinburgh Waverley sits in the deep, narrow valley that separates the medieval Old Town from the grid of the Georgian New Town. It is the only mainline railway station in the world named after a novel, taking its title from the Waverley books by Sir Walter Scott. Engineers built the station in the mid-nineteenth century by carving out the site of the old Nor Loch, a stagnant pond that once served as the city’s defensive moat and informal sewage dump.
