Federal Building

The Federal Building in downtown Anchorage is defined by a massive, tiered concrete facade that creates a stark, geometric contrast against the surrounding streetscape. Completed in nineteen seventy-eight, it serves as the administrative hub for various federal agencies. During the early planning stages, designers faced a unique challenge: the building had to withstand significant seismic activity while housing sensitive government records. A federal judge once famously ordered the entire structural foundation be overhauled mid-construction after discovering the initial earthquake reinforcements fell short.
