The Anchorage Veterans Memorial features a tall, vertical spire of dark stone rising above a circular plaza in the Delany Park Strip. It replaced a smaller, older memorial that stood nearby for decades. In the nineteen eighties, the city sought to create a more permanent space for reflection and remembrance. Former Mayor Tony Knowles and local veteran groups pushed to dedicate this specific site, eventually selecting a design that uses local granite to ground the monument in the Alaskan landscape it honors.
