High Bridge Arms was a small, unassuming storefront on Mission Street that became a flashpoint for national debates on gun control. Founded in the nineteen fifties by Bob Chow, an Olympic pistol shooter who competed for the United States in the nineteen forty-eight London Games, it stood as the final remaining gun shop in San Francisco for many years. Its existence in a rapidly changing, liberal city made it a symbol for both gun rights advocates, who viewed it as a last bastion, and local activists who saw it as an out-of-place public nuisance.
