Felton Institute

The Felton Institute stands as the oldest nonsectarian social service provider in San Francisco, with roots reaching back to eighteen eighty-nine. It began as the Associated Charities of San Francisco, a relief organization created to address the needs of an expanding city during a period when many social institutions were either disorganized or inhumane. The organization earned its name from Katharine Kitty Felton, who became the executive director in nineteen zero-one. She became known as the conscience of the city for her relentless advocacy and her role in pioneering modern social work practices.
