Golden Gate Park Polo Field

The Polo Field in Golden Gate Park is a vast, sunken oval of grass wrapped in a continuous running track. It sits on what was once shifting, unstable sand dunes, leveled by engineers in the early twentieth century to create a grand space for public sport. In nineteen thirty-nine, the field hosted a championship polo match, but it became famous for its Sunday concerts in the late nineteen sixties, when thousands gathered on the grass to hear bands like the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane play for free.
