The Chain of Lakes Meadow sits in a shallow basin, defined by the thicket of pine and cypress trees that wall it off from the rest of the park. Before this park existed, this entire area consisted of shifting, treacherous sand dunes. John McLaren, the park's longtime superintendent, spent decades dumping thousands of tons of topsoil here to anchor the ground. He hauled in plant life from across the globe to transform this desert into a green, sunken bowl that feels entirely removed from the city.
