Observation Bunker

These concrete structures were erected by the United States military in 1942, during the height of World War Two. They served as base end stations, tactical lookout points designed to defend the San Francisco coastline from potential naval threats. Soldiers stationed inside used precise optical instruments to calculate the azimuth and speed of incoming vessels. This data was then transmitted to nearby heavy artillery batteries at Fort Barry and Fort Winfield Scott, which relied on these exact coordinates to aim their guns. Once the war ended, the military abandoned these positions, leaving them to be reclaimed by the park landscape.
