A bronze serpent coils around a young woman clutching a dagger in the sculpture called Naga and the Captainess. It stands near the Conservatory of Flowers, depicting a scene from a traditional Balinese legend. The Indonesian government gifted this statue to San Francisco in nineteen ninety-one to celebrate a cultural exchange program. The artist, Nyoman Nuarta, used his signature metal welding technique to create the intricate, flowing scales of the serpent, which contrast sharply against the stoic expression of the figure.
