Evolutionary Rainbow

landmark

The Evolutionary Rainbow mural stands at the corner of Haight and Cole streets as a remnant of the nineteen sixty-seven Summer of Love. Artist Yana Zegri painted the work while she was managing a business in the building, choosing a design that uses a spectrum of colors to depict the progression of life from simple protozoa to complex modern species. If you look closely at the individual color bands, you can see the detailed illustrations of dinosaurs, animals, and humans that tell this story of biological development. The mural serves as one of the oldest community-created art pieces in the city and reflects the experimental spirit of the era when it first appeared.
