Koshland Park

Koshland Park stands on ground that was once the site of a tragic event. In early 1973, a devastating arson fire destroyed a four-story apartment building at this corner of Page and Buchanan streets, resulting in the loss of four lives. Instead of allowing the burned-out lot to remain a vacant eyesore, neighborhood residents campaigned to transform the land into a community space. The children of Daniel E. Koshland, a prominent San Francisco philanthropist and Levi Strauss executive, purchased the nearly one-acre site as an eightieth birthday gift for their father, enabling the creation of the park.
