Miguel Hidalgo Statue

The bronze statue of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in Mission Dolores Park was a gift to the city of San Francisco from the local Mexican community in nineteen sixty-two. He is remembered as the father of Mexican independence for his role in launching the uprising against Spanish rule on September sixteenth, eighteen ten. The sculptor, Juan Fernando Olaguibel, designed the figure to gaze southeast, symbolically facing back toward the country he fought to liberate.
