Sydney G. Walton Square holds a grove of redwood trees enclosed by the brick walls of old warehouses in the Jackson Square district. Before the city installed this park in nineteen eighty-four, the space served as a private parking lot for workers in the nearby financial offices. Landscape architect Topher Delaney designed the garden to mimic the forest floor of the Santa Cruz Mountains. She imported ferns and boulders to transform the hard concrete patch into a quiet, shaded retreat for the neighborhood.
