Roos House (San Francisco)

The Roos House was built in nineteen-hundred and nine as a wedding gift for Leon and Elizabeth Roos. Elizabeth’s father, a partner in the Orpheum Theater Circuit, commissioned the celebrated architect Bernard Maybeck to design the home while the couple was away on their honeymoon in Europe. This absence gave Maybeck unusual creative freedom, resulting in a unique Tudor-style mansion that blends high-art architecture with deeply personal touches. You can see evidence of this in the entrance, where the Roos family crest is carved directly into the front door. The house is the largest private residence Maybeck ever designed in San Francisco, spanning over ten thousand square feet.
