The building occupies the entire city block bounded by State, Washington, Wabash, and Randolph streets, distinguished by a massive, wrap-around facade of cream-colored terra cotta. Originally the Marshall Field and Company store, its central feature remains the vaulted glass dome designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany. When it opened, the store introduced the concept of the customer as someone to be served, not merely someone to be sold to. Harry Selfridge, the manager, pioneered the open display and the return policy here.
