The steel and glass headhouse at Millennium Station sits tucked below street level, marking the entrance to one of Chicago's busiest commuter hubs. This station occupies the site of the former Illinois Central Railroad terminal. In the nineteen nineties, planners buried the tracks to create the park above, effectively hiding the massive rail operations from public view. Engineers installed thick concrete slabs over the platforms to support the weight of the gardens and sculptures that now define the surface level for millions of visitors.
