First Baptist Church of Boston

The First Baptist Church stands out for the tower that looms over the corner of Commonwealth Avenue and Clarendon Street. The sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed the angels carved into the limestone frieze, the same man who created the Statue of Liberty. When the building opened in eighteen seventy-two, the congregation moved here from the South End. They brought with them a history dating back to sixteen sixty-five, when the original members were arrested for meeting in public.
