Phillips School

The Phillips School building is identifiable by its sturdy, symmetrical brick façade and the prominent central clock face looking out over Anderson Street. Built in eighteen twenty-four, it served as a primary school for the neighborhood. When the city of Boston officially integrated its schools in eighteen fifty-five, this building became the first in the city to educate white and Black children in the same classrooms. It remained a place of learning for over a century before closing its doors as a school.
