The Armory of the First Corps of Cadets features a distinctive dark gray stone facade and a pair of rounded corner towers that resemble a medieval fortress. Built in eighteen ninety-one, it served as the headquarters and drill hall for a private military organization that traced its roots back to the colonial era. When the city held a massive parade to celebrate the end of the Civil War, the Corps marched as the personal guard for the governor, signaling their high social standing.
