Massachusetts State House

The golden dome topping the Massachusetts State House rises above Beacon Hill, sheathed in twenty-three karat gold leaf that catches the afternoon sun. Designed by Charles Bulfinch and finished in seventeen ninety-eight, this building replaced the old colonial state house downtown. When the copper roof began to leak, Paul Revere’s company handled the task of re-covering it in eighteen oh two. His team hammered the copper sheets, creating a durable layer that protected the structure for decades before the gold gilding appeared.
