King's Chapel

King's Chapel displays a heavy stone exterior and a grand portico of fluted wooden columns, a design that feels physically out of place among the surrounding modern skyscrapers. It began as the first Anglican church in Boston in sixteen eighty-six, built on land taken from a public burying ground because no local Puritan would sell property for a Church of England house of worship. Royal governors worshipped here in high-backed pews while the city outside remained steadfastly against them.
