North End

The Old North Church features a white wooden steeple that rises above the surrounding brick rooftops of the North End. Built in seventeen twenty-three, it serves as the oldest standing church building in Boston. On the night of April eighteen, seventeen seventy-five, the church sexton Robert Newman climbed the steeple and held two lanterns aloft to warn patriots that British troops were moving by sea. He slipped out a window and vanished into the darkness before the soldiers could catch him.
