Engine Company Number 2 stands at 1313 Washington Street as a permanent reminder of a local irony. Its predecessor was an earlier firehouse built in 1880, which suffered the indignity of burning to the ground just eight years later. The current brick structure rose in 1890 on land donated by the Hoboken Land and Improvement Company as a direct replacement for the building lost in that blaze.
