Sybil's Cave

Sybil's Cave was hand carved into the serpentine rock of Castle Point in eighteen thirty two by the brothers who owned the estate above it. They designed the chamber to mimic the famous natural grottoes of Europe, hoping to attract visitors to their private riverside grounds. The cave stayed naturally cool throughout the summer months because of its deep penetration into the cliff side, making it a popular destination for locals who brought their own spring water jugs to collect the clear flow from a natural iron spring within the dark walls.
