Stevens Institute of Technology

The Stevens Institute of Technology stands on the grounds of Castle Point, which is the highest natural point in Hoboken. This location was once the private estate of the Stevens family, a dynasty of engineers who essentially built the industrial foundation of the region. Long before the university opened its doors in eighteen seventy, the family patriarch, Colonel John Stevens, used this elevated land to test his ambitious mechanical inventions. He famously experimented with steam-powered locomotion on a circular track located right on this estate. This site marks the spot where the family realized many of the technologies that defined early American travel.
