The building you are approaching at 340 West 55th Street displays the elegant details of the Venetian Gothic style, a rare architectural choice for a structure in Hell's Kitchen. Completed in 1925, it was originally designed as a headquarters and dormitory for the National Bible Institute, a center where hundreds of students could live and study under one roof. The architects, McKenzie, Voorhees and Gmelin, crafted the space to include a full library, laboratory, and an auditorium on the main floor. The project cost over one million dollars at the time, reflecting the significance the organization placed on their mission to prepare religious leaders in the heart of the city.
