Monumento Alice

The Alice in Wonderland sculpture serves as a memorial to Margarita Delacorte, the wife of publisher and philanthropist George Delacorte. Following her death in 1956, George commissioned the bronze work as a gift to the children of New York City, honoring his wife's habit of reading Lewis Carroll's stories aloud to their own children. Dedicated in 1959, the piece remains one of the few public monuments in the city designed specifically to be touched and climbed upon rather than merely observed from a distance.
