Vivian Beaumont Theater

cultural

The Vivian Beaumont Theater occupies a unique position in New York City as the only Broadway house located outside the traditional Theater District near Times Square. When it opened in 1965, it represented a bold departure from the standard commercial theater model, intentionally placed here in the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts to serve as a home for a serious, European-style repertory company. Its northern and western location makes the experience of arriving here distinct, as you walk across the open, airy plaza of the Lincoln Center complex rather than navigating the dense, neon-lit congestion of midtown Manhattan.
