This site is the geographic and creative heartbeat of the seminal nineteen ninety four hip hop album, Illmatic, by the rapper Nas. The sprawling complex consists of ninety six Y-shaped buildings designed to maximize sunlight and ventilation for its residents. While it served as a home for thousands of families beginning in the late nineteen thirties, it evolved into a powerful symbol of urban struggle and resilience during the height of the crack epidemic in the nineteen eighties and early nineties. The stark, weathered brick architecture of these buildings became permanently linked to hip hop history when it was featured as the backdrop on the album cover of Illmatic.
