Hamilton Fountain

The Hamilton Fountain stands as one of the last remaining examples of a decorative horse trough in New York City. At the time of its completion in 1906, thousands of horses traversed Manhattan daily to transport goods and people, and this Tennessee marble structure provided a necessary watering point for them. The fountain is built into the nineteenth-century retaining wall of the early sections of Riverside Park, a reminder of an era when equine transport served as the city's primary means of mobility.
