Public School 9 (historic building)

The historic Public School 9 building on West End Avenue stands as a rare architectural survivor from a time when the Upper West Side was transitioning into a neighborhood of grand townhouses. Designed by the visionary school architect Charles B. J. Snyder and completed in 1896, the structure features a distinctive Dutch-inspired roofline with stepped gables and ornamental finials. It is one of the few institutional buildings from the nineteenth century that remains on this avenue, as almost all of its original residential neighbors were replaced by large apartment buildings in the early twentieth century.
