The Garrison Church at the edge of Dawes Point features a steeply pitched roof and heavy stone walls constructed from yellow block sandstone. Soldiers from the imperial regiments stationed in Sydney commissioned this building in eighteen forty to serve as their own place of worship. They wanted a church near the military barracks, so they hauled the stone up the hill themselves. On Sundays, the soldiers marched down the street from the barracks in full uniform to fill the pews for the morning service.
