Hickson Road Reserve

A jagged, rusted iron crane stands over the grass at Hickson Road Reserve. This relic once hauled cargo from the deep-hulled ships docking at the Walsh Bay wharves during the nineteen twenties. When the timber wharves finally decayed and international shipping lanes shifted elsewhere, the city left the crane behind as a piece of the industrial landscape. It marks the edge of the waterfront where stevedores spent their days moving timber, wool, and heavy machinery off the freight liners.
