Old Treasury Building

The Old Treasury Building features a facade of golden Bacchus Marsh sandstone and prominent columns that echo the Renaissance style of the mid-nineteenth century. Designed by nineteen-year-old architect John James Clark, it served as the secure vault for the vast wealth pouring out of the Victorian goldfields. In eighteen sixty-two, the building held the colony’s entire gold reserve. Miners and officials arrived here to deposit the raw riches that built modern Melbourne, leaving the building as a heavy, permanent anchor for the city.
