St Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne

St Paul's Cathedral sits at the corner of Flinders and Swanston Streets, identified by its trio of sandstone spires and the honey-colored limestone facade. William Butterfield designed the church in the Gothic Transitional style, bringing materials from across the British Empire to satisfy his aesthetic vision. When the foundation stone was laid in eighteen eighty, the site served as a vegetable market. Workers eventually unearthed an old bullock track and broken bottles, remnants of the city's rougher, earlier days, beneath the altar.
