The Conservatory

The Conservatory in Fitzroy Gardens stands out for its high, arched roof of glass and ornate white wrought iron. Built in nineteen thirty, this building replaced an earlier greenhouse on the same site. City officials commissioned the structure to display seasonal floral arrangements for the public, a purpose it still serves today. During the Great Depression, the project provided work for local laborers, and the city planted lush ferns and palms inside, keeping the interior a constant, temperate oasis for visitors.
