The Royal Arcade features a high, glass-vaulted roof and a soft, cream-colored interior that stands out against the nearby brickwork. Opened in eighteen seventy, it remains the oldest surviving arcade in Australia. During its early years, the passage gained fame for its two mechanical statues of Gog and Magog, which struck bells on the hour. They were carved from wood by Thomas Gaunt, a local watchmaker who placed them above the central clock, keeping time for shoppers and strollers alike.
