St. Patrick's Cathedral

The twin spires of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral rise three hundred and forty feet above the city, built from bluestone and sandstone that glows in the afternoon sun. While it serves as the seat of the Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne, construction dragged on for over eighty years because of the nineteen-sixties gold rush and shifting architectural tastes. Architect William Wardell insisted on the gothic revival style, but the spires were not added until nineteen thirty-nine, when materials finally arrived from England after a lengthy delay.
