Cooks' Cottage

Cooks' Cottage is a stone house with small, lead-paned windows nestled within the Fitzroy Gardens. Its history began in seventeen fifty-five in Great Ayton, England, where it belonged to the parents of Captain James Cook. In nineteen thirty-three, Australian businessman Russell Grimwade purchased the structure. He had the house dismantled brick by brick, packed into two hundred and fifty-three crates, and shipped across the ocean to be reassembled here as a gift for the centenary of the state of Victoria.
