Princes Bridge

The Princes Bridge connects the city center to the south bank of the Yarra River with three distinct iron arches painted in deep red and cream. When the current structure opened in eighteen eighty-eight, it replaced an earlier wooden crossing that frequently flooded. Engineer John Grainger designed the bridge, and his son, the composer Percy Grainger, later gained fame, but the bridge itself remains a primary artery for Melbourne. Its ornate cast-iron lamp posts still light the path for thousands of daily commuters.
